Basic information about eSIM technology
eSIM (embedded SIM) is a built-in SIM card that is permanently installed in the device. Unlike a traditional SIM card, eSIM does not require physical replacement - the carrier profile can be downloaded and activated digitally.
This allows you to instantly activate a data plan anywhere in the world without having to find a local SIM card store.
No, eSIM works independently from your regular SIM card. Most modern smartphones support Dual SIM, which means you can:
Most devices allow storing multiple eSIM profiles (up to 10+), but only one can be active at a time. You can switch between profiles in your phone settings.
For example, you can have separate eSIM profiles for different countries and activate the appropriate one before traveling.
Check if your device supports eSIM
iPhone: Go to Settings > Cellular. If you see "Add eSIM Plan" or "Add Data Plan" option, your phone supports eSIM.
Android: Go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIM cards. If you see an option to add eSIM, your phone is compatible.
You can also check your phone's IMEI number (*#06#) - devices supporting eSIM also display EID.
The following iPhone models support eSIM:
Note: iPhones purchased in mainland China do not support eSIM (except iPhone 13 mini, 12 mini and SE).
Yes, your phone must be carrier unlocked to use eSIM from a carrier other than the one you bought the phone from.
If you bought the phone on installments or with a contract, it may be locked to that carrier. Contact your carrier to check the status and request unlocking.
Some tablets and smartwatches with built-in LTE modem support eSIM:
However, our eSIMs are optimized mainly for smartphones. For other devices, contact us to confirm compatibility.
How to install and use eSIM
We recommend installing eSIM before departure, when you still have access to stable Wi-Fi. Installation requires an internet connection.

You can check expiration date in the Customer Panel.
Explanation of eSIM-related terms
eSIM (embedded SIM) is a built-in chip in the device that functions as a traditional SIM card. The carrier profile is downloaded digitally, without need for a physical card.
Data roaming is a service that allows you to use another carrier's cellular network, usually abroad. You must turn on data roaming for eSIM to connect to the local network in the destination country.
Dual SIM is a device feature that allows simultaneous use of two SIM cards (or SIM card + eSIM). You can choose which line to use for calls, SMS, and data.
APN (Access Point Name) is the access point to the mobile network. In most cases, APN is configured automatically. If you have connection problems, you may need to manually configure APN - details can be found in the eSIM email.
Carrier lock means the phone is locked to a specific carrier and cannot use SIM card or eSIM from another carrier. To use BlueSky eSIM eSIM, your phone must be unlocked.
